Club Tropicana

What a beautiful poster! Advertising Sofrito and Quantic Warehouse Party. I wish I could go... the depressing weather makes me long for latin beats (and heat)

Designs of the Year - Design Museum

Some quick snaps of my favourite bits from the Brit Insurance Designs of the Year; currently on show at the Design Museum.

I particularly love the 100 plastic pandas, which sense movement and rotate in unison to face you. It was designed for WWF to raise awareness of panda endangerment.

Also, much design which highlights the huge inflation problem in Zimbabwe.

My Space

I'm busy taking photos of other people's 'spaces', but it didn't ever occur to me to document my own! I guess it feels a little self-indulgent... but then, isn't that what blogging's all about? So as I've been on a blogging frenzy today (I swear, coffee is like speed for me) I decided to do it. When it's your own stuff though, like with your own photographs, art, cooking, whatever... you just can't see it objectively and it doesn't look special. But here they are anyway - pictures of my room in London.

La Rosa

Ohhh man... found these bad boys today in a brilliant Mexican shop right opposite my friend Alex's house (oh to live opposite a Mexican shop).

They appealed on many levels - first and foremost because they're basically solid peanut butter, extremely sweet and reminiscent of one of my favourite treats from my Buenos Aires days, secondly beccause, well, they're Mexican, and I bloody LOVE foreign shit, and thirdly because how cute is the wrapper?!

Dirty Diana

I was given a Mini Diana lomo camera for Christmas (great present, hey?!) and here are some of the best images from my first roll. I've wanted to get into lomography for ages, partly because I'm obsessed with old-school, contrasty, grainy pictures and partly because it's an entirely new style of photography for me, one where you don't have to compose, just snap away and hope for the best. Very liberating!

Photos taken in and around East London (as ever).

Abandonment

100 Abandoned Houses is exactly that - a series of photographs of abandoned houses in Detroit. Photographer Kevin Bauman became interested in the depressing and distressed state of his home town and documented 100 of the many derelict buildings in the area.

Bauman captures beauty in destruction and ruin - the colours, form and symmetry provide stark contrast with the loneliness and sadness which surround the empty houses.

Kaffi - Reykjavik

Mokka Kaffi

Grai Kotturinn

Kaffismiðja Íslands

There is a huge cafe culture in Reykjavik, which appealed to me greatly. There is always a seat, it's completely accepted for you to go in alone and take ages over coffee with a book or a laptop. And they all happen to have beautiful (and often very retro) interiors.

Oh oh Opal!

These boxes contain refreshing little pastilles - a popular Icelandic confectionary. I was more interested in the package design though - so retro! More like a 60s washing detergent than a sweet box!

Crazy for the Krona

I am so enthralled by the Icelandic coins that I am blogging about them. Fish are way better than the Queen's head.

Haukur's Home

I just returned from a trip to Iceland to see my friend Haukur. I stayed with him in his little flat in Reykjavik - one room which contains his bed, kitchen, living area, work space... all in one.

I always love seeing my friends' homes as they provide an insight into that person's world.

Haukur's world is one well-travelled, well read, with plenty of music and memories.

It was also my home for those 5 days... I became quite attached to that little room.
